. >> the extraordinary thing romney received a couple million votes less than what john mccain received in 2008. so why was it that the republican base which seemed energized before the election, didn't come out and support him the way they did john mccain, for example? >> well, here's part of that story i think. the republican base was energized. romney received more than 57 million votes. that is a heck of a lot of people. they were committed and i was talking to all of them and they were really, towards the end, maybe last 10 days kind of on fire. however, that base itself is getting smaller. you know it is a smaller slice of the pie than it used to be. and i think one of the big lessons of this campaign is that republican political operatives have been for a quarter century tri saying exciting the base, getting the base to the polls. it is about more than that now. from here on every election is trying to expand the base, meaning trying to per said. trying to talk to getting with people, look, this is our plan. this is it why we think it is best. i think the way the republican party

we've had president bush and john mccain and others who have supported comprehensive immigration reform in the past. so we need to seize the moment. and my expectation is that we get a bill introduced and we begin the process in congress very soon after my inauguration. and in fact some conversations i think are already beginning to take place among senators and congressman and my staff about what would this look like? and when i say comprehensive immigration reform, it is very similar to the outlines of previous efforts of comprehensive immigration reform. i think it should include a continuation of the strong border security measures we've taken because we have to secure our borders. i think it should contain serious penalties for companies that are purposely hiring undocumented workers and taking advantage of them. and i think do think there should be a a pathway for legal status for those who are living in this country, are not engaged in criminal activity, are here, simply to work. it's important for them to it is important for them to learn english. it is important for them to pot

john mccain was the guy who drove cap and trade. now the republicans have turned their back on their own solution which was market-based solution. now they're calling it a carbon tax though what cap and trade would do would create a different set of incentives that everyone in the market would get to participate in. the problem politically politics placed the emphasis on the wrong place. politics isn't set up to deal with long-term problems and we treat climate as if it's a long-term problem, it's not. forget about the fiscal cliff there's a climate cliff and we've already gone over it and that's what's disturbing about the president's remarks. they don't reflect the urgency of the reality. >> we were at a good turning point of al gore's movie, public pressure mounting to do something and over time likely because of the recession we moved away from that conversation. i can't help but think if it was ohio and not new york that was hit by a storm like this that we would have a different conversation going on. and i think you're right.

but what i said is john mccain, 90% of his votes were christian and 90% were white. and white folks in this country who are voting, 90% of all the votes are down close to 70% and have you to get larger and charge larger share of them in order to win. one point, if mitt romney won almost as large a share of the white vote as ronald reagan did. if the country had the same demography at 1980 and 84, romney would be president. >> sean: what do you think of that analysis? >> i mean, that's like wishful happening, it is not reality. the suggestion, i think this is what got pat in trouble is that somehow, it's only a real america if it's overwhelmingly white in terms of the electorate or the population. again, that's just, you know, looking back to the 1950s. the reality is that in yesterday's election, you look at the latino population, as a share of the vote twent from 9% in 2008, now up to 10 percent. 70% for obam a. black population, 90% for obam a. asian population, plus 50 for obama. this is really, i think of a changing, more diverse america -- [overlapping dialogue]
